Short Term Emergency Loan
-
Emergency Loans are available to registered financial aid recipients who
have paid or deferred all past due and current BA/RC charges and who have
future financial aid that will be credited to their BA/RC accounts during
the current quarter. As the name implies, these loans are for emergency
situations only. Routine, predictable monthly expenses are not considered
emergencies unless something has occurred which prevents the student from
meeting these costs.
Teaching Assistantship (TA) Loans
-
Teaching Assistant Loans are available from the Financial Aid Office to
alleviate financial hardships experienced by Teaching Assistants during
their initial period of employment. Since most students need this
assistance in fall quarter, it is highly advised that TAs works
with their departments so that the required payroll processing is
completed by mid-September. Meeting this deadline will result in the
first payroll check being available on October 1.
-
The initial period of employment is the first quarter of
employment as a Teaching Assistant. TAs that were employed by the
University in a prior academic year are not eligible for the TA loan.
-
TAs starting their first quarter of teaching can borrow up to the
amount of their first month's salary and repay that amount out of
that quarter’s paychecks.
-
TA Loans may be requested up to 30 days before the first day of
instruction of the quarter in which the TAship begins.
-
The last day to apply for a loan is the last day of the month in
which the Teaching Assistant begins his/her initial period of employment.
-
How to apply: TAs must supply a letter of
employment from their department that indicates:
- the initial quarter of their TAship, and
- what their monthly salary will be.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Fee Reduction Certificates
-
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) offers a limited number of GRE Fee
Reduction Certificates on a first-come, first-served basis that are
available for college seniors and unenrolled college graduates who meet
eligibility requirements. A Fee Reduction Certificate may be used for one
General Test and/or one Subject Test. Eligibility for participation in the
Fee Reduction Program is limited to one time only. Thereafter, the full
test fee will be charged for additional tests for which the candidate
registers. Individuals meeting the eligibility requirements will be
required to pay 50 percent of the full test fee. The reduced fee is $70
for the General Test and $65 for a Subject Test.
GRE Fee Reduction Certificates are available at the Financial Aid Office.
Students seeking a fee reduction certificate must have a current FAFSA
on file at UCSB so that the Financial Aid Office can determine if they
meet the following guidelines:
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens who are college seniors or unenrolled college graduates.
- College seniors must be:
- a dependent student who has an Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) that shows a parental contribution of not more than $1,400 for the senior year, or
- an independent student who has an ISIR that shows a student contribution of not more than $1,800 for the senior year.
- Unenrolled college graduates must:
- have applied for financial aid, and
- have an ISIR that indicates independent status and a student contribution of not more than $1,800.
Talk with a Financial Aid Professional
-
Students may call or walk-in during our regular business hours to speak
directly to a financial aid professional if they have questions about the
financial aid process.
Budget Increase
-
A financial aid applicant who feels that the budget (cost of attendance)
we used to determine aid eligibility is insufficient can file a "
Student's Request for a Budget Increase" (SRFBI). We can increase
a student's budget (and aid eligibility) with proper documentation of
legitimate educational expenses that exceed the costs that are used in our
standard, generic budgets. Due to fund limitations, budget
increases are funded with additional loan eligibility. The “SRFBI”
form will be available on October 6th under the “Download Forms” link on the left.
Request For Review (RFR)
-
Student Contribution (SC) and Parent Contribution (PC) amounts are
calculated using a federally mandated formula. If you or your family has
been adversely affected by extraordinary circumstances that have reduced
your or your family's ability to contribute to your education at UCSB,
we can review those circumstances in order to recalculate the student
and/or parent contribution, thus potentially increasing your aid
eligibility. The Parent/Student Request for Review Forms can be
found under the “Download Forms” link on the left.
Computer Loans and Budget Increases
-
Personal computers are recognized as a part of a student’s educational
expenses by the UCSB Financial Aid Office. As a result, financial aid
recipients may qualify for additional financial aid to assist with the
costs associated with the purchase of a computer, including a monitor
and a printer purchased with the computer. Computer purchases must be
made by the student after September 1 of the academic year in which
they are applying for the computer loan.
This program is intended to assist students who do not have a computer,
not for students who want to upgrade or replace their computer. Purchases
made from private parties will not be accepted. Purchase receipts must be
submitted to the Financial Aid Office in order to qualify for additional
financial aid.
Due to limited availability of funds, these expenses will be funded with
student and/or parent loans. These loans are only available to students
who have not previously received a student loan for computer purchase.
The "Request for a Budget Increase for Computer Purchase" form is
available on the "Download Forms" tab of the Financial Aid
Office web site beginning in October each academic year, and it is removed
at the end of February. No computer loans are available in spring quarter
or during summer session.
Deadline: The deadline to apply for a computer loan is
the last day in February each academic year.
