2009-2010 Financial Aid Application Instructions

How to Apply:
You must submit a 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor. We encourage all applicants to file the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Filing electronically reduces the processing time and the possibility of errors on your FAFSA. The paper version of the FAFSA is green in color and is available upon request at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Regardless of what type of FAFSA you file, be sure to list UC Santa Barbara’s school code # 001320 in Section 5 for the electronic version or Step 6 for the paper version. You can check the status of your FAFSA with the federal processor at www.fafsa.ed.gov or by calling 1-800-433-3243.

For assistance with the 2009-2010 FAFSA application, the Financial Aid Office recommends that you view our informational tutorial titled: 8 Easy Steps to the FAFSA: A Student’s Guide to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This tutorial is designed to assist you in the completion of your FAFSA in eight simple and easy to understand steps. You can access this tutorial here: http://www.finaid.sa.ucsb.edu/Media/FAFSASimplification/index.html

When to Apply:
You should file the FAFSA by the University of California priority filing deadline of March 2, 2009. If you file a paper FAFSA, we strongly suggest you obtain a Certificate of Mailing from the U.S. Postal Service as proof that you filed by March 2, 2009.

Filing Electronically:
Over 99% of UCSB FAFSA filers choose to file electronically. To assist you with this process, we suggest you first complete the “2009-2010 FAFSA on the Web Worksheet” available at www.fafsa.ed.gov and then transfer that information onto your on-line FAFSA. The advantages are: you won’t have to mail your FAFSA, you won’t have to get a Certificate of Mailing, and the system will tell you if there are any problems with your FAFSA at the time you enter and submit your information. If you don’t already have a Personal Identification Number (PIN), you can start the process by getting a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. If you are required to supply parental information and a parental signature, your parent(s) can also apply for their own PIN at the web address above and sign the application electronically. Note that you must file by 9pm Pacific Coast time on March 2nd to be considered on-time as the federal processor is on East Coast time.

Who is Eligible:
To apply for financial aid at UCSB, you must be either a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen as defined in the FAFSA instructions. Also, you must enroll in a degree-granting program. If you are enrolled through UCSB Extension, you are not eligible.

Scholarships:
No supplemental scholarship application is required. UCSB awards the majority of its limited allocation of scholarship funds to continuing undergraduate UCSB students who file the FAFSA by the March 2, 2009 priority filing deadline. Students who meet this deadline will automatically be considered for scholarships based on their UCSB Grade Point Average (GPA). These scholarship awards will be included as a part of the eligible student’s 2009-2010 financial aid award. While most of the funds are restricted to students with financial need, a very limited amount is awarded on merit and other restrictions required by the donors. New students to UCSB applied for these scholarships when they submitted their 2009-2010 Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships. Additionally, there are links to free scholarship search engines on the scholarship section of our web site http://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/Scholarships/SearchEngines.asp.

Cal Grant:
All undergraduate FAFSA filers who are California residents and do not already have a bachelor’s degree are expected to apply for a Cal Grant from the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). If you received a Cal Grant at UCSB in 2008-2009, simply file a 2009-2010 FAFSA. If you did not receive a Cal Grant in 2008-2009, you must file the FAFSA by March 2, 2009 and have your "Grade Point Average (GPA) Verification Form" sent to CSAC by the March 2, 2009 deadline. You can access this form at this Cal Grant web site http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=1177. Continuing UCSB students who do not already have a Cal Grant were sent an email with information on their Cal Grant GPA verification process. Also, you can check your Cal Grant status on the CSAC Web Grants web site at https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/logon.asp

Teacher Education Program:
Cal Grant A and B recipients who plan to enroll in the Teacher Education Program (TEP) at UCSB may be eligible to renew their Cal Grant award with CSAC for an additional year through the Teacher Credential Program (TCP). Eligible recipients are encouraged to apply for TCP benefits as soon as possible after receiving their bachelor's degree and after being formally accepted into the Teacher Education Program at UCSB.

Eligible students are required to fill out both a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), for the academic year for which you wish to receive benefits, and the Cal Grant TCP Benefits request form (G-44) which is available from CSAC web site.

What's Next:
Approximately 1-2 weeks after the FAFSA processor receives your FAFSA information, they will send you an e-mail informing you to check your processing status on the FAFSA web site (www.fafsa.ed.gov). If you did not provide an e-mail address, the FAFSA processor will mail you a green Student Aid Report (SAR). Carefully review your status and follow the instructions if you need to make any corrections. The UCSB Financial Aid Office will receive your information as long as UC Santa Barbara, school code # 001320, is listed in Section 5 for the electronic version or Step 6 for the paper version.

  • New freshmen will be sent an e-mail in April (new transfers in May) informing them to visit the “Admitted Students ” tab at http://www.admissions.ucsb.edu to view their Unofficial Financial Aid Eligibility Letter which is created to assist them in their admissions decision.

  • All students will be sent a U-Mail informing them to check the status of the processing of their UCSB financial aid at https://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/AidStatus

Don't Forget To:
  • File the FAFSA by 3/2/09 and get a Certificate of Mailing if filing the paper version.

  • List the UC Santa Barbara's code # 001320 as the 1st school code in Section 5 of the electronic version.

  • Submit the Cal Grant GPA Verification form to CSAC by 3/2/09 and get a Certificate of Mailing.

  • Activate your UCSB U-Mail at http://www.umail.ucsb.edu and check it frequently.
